Stones Throw Mini Documentary

Take a brief look inside Stones Throw, the forward thinking record label started in 1996 by none other than Peanut Butter Wolf.  This very well put together mini doc starts at the start with PBW's original group consisting of himself and Charzima, and brings us all the way to present day with a very inspiring look at a newer artist, Jonti.  Enjoy.

Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton

Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton is the film chronicle of the California hip hop and funk label.  Home to artists like Madlib, Jay Dilla, and Aloe Blacc the film is not yet finished and could use your help.  For fans of the label the Kickstarter campaign could be a dream come true.

You have the chance to reach out and contribute, and for super fans who have the means why wouldn't you get a production credit and a tour of the studio with label founder Peanut Butter Wolf?  This is Jeff Broadway's second feature length film, and the release is aimed at July 2013.  Anyone who has enjoyed this music should check out this project.

Dam-Funk: Adolescent Funk

Dam-Funk is the real deal.  He has been recording for himself for two decades, developing his work to his own taste, and using equipment like the Korg M1, Linn Drum, and Casio SK-1 since the days when many other musicians considered them novelty electronics rather than instruments.

At the request of Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam went through many of these recordings, all made on cassette, going back to his teenage years.  As Wolf tells it, “Dam told me, ‘this is your project Wolf.  Do whatever you want with it.  I leave it in your hands.  I don't even wanna see it til it's done.  Have fun.’”

The result is Dam-Fun's Adolescent Funk, a 14-track album recorded between 1988 and 1992.  This will be released October 26 on LP, CD and digital.  Two tracks, It's My Life/I Like Your Big Azz (Girl) were released on 7-inch earlier in 2010.

NXNE Thursday Photos

So last night was a great one.  Starting at Mod Club for White Rabbits, who were exceptionally awesome, and performed a very satisfying set for a 9pm crowd.

After which we made our way to Yonge & Dundas for Bad Religion.  We didn't even watch one song, it is near impossible to get a glance of the stage amongst the outdoor Eaton Centre of sponsor booths.  Completely in the way, and a complete eyesore, not to mention what appears to be a fire hazard, we are curious to see how Sat and Sun work out there with Flaming Lips and Raekwon / Ghostface.

On to Horseshoe for a surprise PS I Love You show that was both loud and awesome.  Definitely recommended.  After which, Unknown Mortal Orchestra sounded incredible, and put on a great show. Two bands that sounded great back to back, fun was had.

Next stop was the lower Great Hall for Julie Doiron featuring Daniel Romano (Attack in Black) on drums.  Great Hall is an amazing venue both upstairs and down, and this was our fourth or fifth time seeing Julie.  She always sounds incredible, always chats up the crowd in between, and of course, her entire catalog is a favorite.  Not to mention, after she mentioned take requests and we blurted out "Will You Still Love Me in December!!", she got right to it, with Daniel doing backup vocals while paying drums.  Definitely a memorable performance, thanks Julie and Daniel.

Finally, the main event, we walked across the street to the Drake Underground for west coast hip hop / funk legend, label owner, dj, producer and all around superhero Peanut Butter Wolf.  Surrounded by giant screens on each wall, PB Wolf took us through his undending collection of music videos and incredible clips of Rick James interviews, small children doing insane bass guitar solos, and Justin Bieber rapping or the classic Gang Starr "Dwyck" beat.

We saw Peanut Butter Wolf a couple years ago at Lollapalooza for the first time and he burned it down.  We have been listening to him since "My Vinyl Weighs a Ton" came out when we were in high school, and we have watched Stones Throw's ascent from indie hip hop label to the still amazingly dope heavy hitter of a label that it is now.

Enjoy the photos friends.  See you tonight.
