Friday, June 15, 2012 at 1:14PM So last night was a great one. Starting at Mod Club for White Rabbits, who were exceptionally awesome, and performed a very satisfying set for a 9pm crowd.
After which we made our way to Yonge & Dundas for Bad Religion. We didn't even watch one song, it is near impossible to get a glance of the stage amongst the outdoor Eaton Centre of sponsor booths. Completely in the way, and a complete eyesore, not to mention what appears to be a fire hazard, we are curious to see how Sat and Sun work out there with Flaming Lips and Raekwon / Ghostface.
On to Horseshoe for a surprise PS I Love You show that was both loud and awesome. Definitely recommended. After which, Unknown Mortal Orchestra sounded incredible, and put on a great show. Two bands that sounded great back to back, fun was had.
Next stop was the lower Great Hall for Julie Doiron featuring Daniel Romano (Attack in Black) on drums. Great Hall is an amazing venue both upstairs and down, and this was our fourth or fifth time seeing Julie. She always sounds incredible, always chats up the crowd in between, and of course, her entire catalog is a favorite. Not to mention, after she mentioned take requests and we blurted out "Will You Still Love Me in December!!", she got right to it, with Daniel doing backup vocals while paying drums. Definitely a memorable performance, thanks Julie and Daniel.
Finally, the main event, we walked across the street to the Drake Underground for west coast hip hop / funk legend, label owner, dj, producer and all around superhero Peanut Butter Wolf. Surrounded by giant screens on each wall, PB Wolf took us through his undending collection of music videos and incredible clips of Rick James interviews, small children doing insane bass guitar solos, and Justin Bieber rapping or the classic Gang Starr "Dwyck" beat.
We saw Peanut Butter Wolf a couple years ago at Lollapalooza for the first time and he burned it down. We have been listening to him since "My Vinyl Weighs a Ton" came out when we were in high school, and we have watched Stones Throw's ascent from indie hip hop label to the still amazingly dope heavy hitter of a label that it is now.
